DIY Wood Slice Christmas Ornaments: Made From Your Own Christmas Tree

It’s that merry time of year when we bring the woods right into our homes in the form of Christmas trees! It’s become a tradition of many to save a “wood slice” or “wood cookie” from their Christmas Tree, to commemorate that year’s festivities or use in craft projects. A favorite new trend of ours is using wood cookies to make Christmas ornaments, perfect for gifting, using as gift tags, or for hanging on your own tree. Ornaments can be drawn on, handpainted, or burned with imagery. The live edge wood slices have a wonderful rustic wood vibe you'll love.

But will these wood slices be well preserved for next year?

The best way to protect your Wood Slice Ornaments from cracking and splitting is to treat them with Pentacryl right after they are cut. Pentacryl is a wood stabilizer for freshly cut, or "green" wood. It will keep wood from splitting, cracking, or warping as it dries out over time.

For small wood slices, simply soak them in this green wood stabilizer and then dry them slowly. For larger pieces, you may choose to brush on multiple coats of Pentacryl until the wood cookies are completely saturated before drying them. Once the treated wood has thoroughly dried, it is ready for sanding, painting, staining, wood-burning and/or sealing.
